About
About PC Fieldbook
A free, independent field manual for the home PC. We publish procedures. We do not sell software, services or support.
Why this manual exists
When a computer misbehaves, the first thing many people find is a page that wants something from them: a download, a subscription, a phone call. Some of those pages are scams that copy the look of Microsoft, McAfee or Norton.
PC Fieldbook takes the opposite approach. Each procedure is written like a page from a good workshop manual: what to check, in what order, what each step does, and what to watch out for. Wherever Windows already includes the right tool, we use it. When only the software company can help, for example with a subscription or a refund, we say so and link to its official support site.
Who publishes it
PC Fieldbook is published by Fieldbook Media, based in Leeds, United Kingdom. You can reach the publisher at hello@pcfieldbook.info.
The procedures are written and maintained by the PC Fieldbook editors. How we research, date and correct them is set out in our editorial policy.
What we are not
- We are not Microsoft, McAfee, Norton, Gen Digital or any hardware or software manufacturer, and we are not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any of them.
- We do not offer technical support, repairs, remote access, subscription management or refunds.
- We do not have a phone line, and we never ask anyone to phone a number.
- We do not host downloads or ask you to install anything to read a procedure.
If a page, pop-up or caller claims to be PC Fieldbook and offers any of the above, it is not us.
How the site is funded
The publisher pays for the site. There are no affiliate links, sponsored posts or paid placements, and no company has paid to be included or to review a procedure before publication. We may buy search ads on Google so that people looking for help can find these free procedures; that is the only advertising we do. Our advertising disclosure has the details.
How to use a procedure
- Find the symptom that matches yours in the troubleshooting chart, or search all procedures.
- Read the In short box and the data plate (what it applies to, difficulty and time) before you start.
- Work through the steps in order. Tick each one off as you go; your ticks are saved only in your own browser.
- Stop at any step marked Caution until you have read it, and back up important files before any step that changes system settings.
Corrections and suggestions
Windows and security software change often, so a menu name may differ from what you see. If something does not match, email hello@pcfieldbook.info with the procedure number (for example 1.2) and the step. We read every message, and we correct procedures as soon as we have checked the change.
